GRAZING PIGS

ADVANTAGES of lucerne Apart from roots and green soilingcrops, the only other thing to consider is the kind of grass to lay down for pigs, and' on this particular subject there is not too much evidence. Pigs are rather hard on pasture, which becomes notoriously weedy-after they have been grazing on it for some time. A high proportion of "clover is undoubtedly to be desired, but pigs have a habit of biting out the roots if the grazing is at all poor or reduced in quantity. From a nutritional point of view lucerne is an almost ideal fodder for grazing pigs, and because of its high protein and mineral content, should be exceptionally suited to grazing farrowing sows. Experiments are now being conducted at Cambridge University farm on tethering breeding sows. The employment of this system in grazing lucerne with pigs would give the farmer complete control over the extent to which the plants were grazed, and, if proper attention, with frequent removal to a new " pitch " were given, the lucerne stand should not suffer in any way.
