FIRES IN THE WAITAKERES

Sir, —I read this week an account of a prosecution brought by £he City Council against a resident for lighting a fire wit ho 4 1 a, permit. This brings to mind the urgent necessity for the erection of public fireplaces on the roads to the West Coast that traverse the waterworks area. At present or at any time of the year if trampers or cyclists, on their way to Piha or Karekare, light a fire to boil their billy for lunch on the road, they are pounced upon by council rangers. If the council prohibits the lighting of fires on these roads, then it should see that proper public fireplaces are provided where there would be no danger to adjoining property. J. D. McFarland.
