WELLINGTON STAKES
good field engaged two-year-old candidates GALILEE STRONGLY FANCIED BY ARCHER An event 011 the first clay of the Wellington Hacing Club's Summer Meeting at Trentham next Tuesday that will create a good deal of interest is the Wellington Stakes, of £-300, 5 furlongs. The race is confined to two and three-year-olds at weight-for-age, with penalties for winners of over £SOO. Tho race is eno in which two-year-olds have enjoyed marked success and horses of that ago are well represented this year, when the Aucklander Galilee may prove tho best; of them. Galilee has performed well through the season and her last win was achieved in tho Royal Stakes at Ellerslie. She is the only one in the field who has incurred a penalty. This is 71b. and brings her weight to 7.2, so that she will be meeting tho others nt a disadvantage, which will be increased because of the fact that she is to he ridden by L. J. Ellis, who will ride her several pounds overweight. However, she is a good filly and the task may not bo beyond her, more • especially as she begins well and has trained 011 nicely lately. Form of Bun Fight Of the -other two-year-olds engaged the likeliest may be Bun Eight. She has been improving with every race and, after running second on the first dav of the summer carnival at Ellerslie, she won her next two starts in good style. Besides being a speedy beginner, Bun Fight is a resolute finisher and she will disappoint if she fails to make a forward showing. Pakanui, II Duee, Debbam and Severe are other juveniles with some form to recommend them and possibly they may be capable of showing somo improvement. The best of the three-year-olds engaged appear to be Mother Superior, Variant and Burnish. Mother Superior won at her last start when she was successful in the open sprint on the final day of the summer carnival at Ellerslie* Possibly she was assisted on that occasion by the easy going, to which she. is partial, but she is just coming to form again and may take a lot of beating under any conditions. Variant and Burnish Variant was a very close second to Galilee in the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie and will now meet her on some pounds better terms. However, the furlong shorter distance may be more favourable, to Galilee,'who can run a merry five furlongs. Burnish has not raced up to expectations this season. She failed to do at all well in the spring but. latest reports indicate that she lias made some progress lately. Burnish possesses the brilliancy to make her presence felt if fit and it will be interesting to see how she fares. None of the others engaged has shown form to indicate that they are up to classic standard, although Limulus, Silver W ings and Emissary are speedy improvers. The work of the candidate's in the next few days may have an influence 011 the final summingup but some who may find favour are Galilee, Mother Superior and Variant.
