NOTES

A new typo of collision-proof rubber post is beinc tried out in Paris. Amber lights are fitted in the base.

The ambitious project of lighting 10,000 kilometres of the French Routes Nationale is'outlined in a bill which will shortly be presented in the French Chamber by the Parliamentary Committee of Public Works. The estimated cost is 600.000,000 francs.

Following a recommendation by the Leeds Watch Committee to the City Council urging that rear lights should be made compulsory for cyclists, a deputation representing 7000 Yorkshire cyclists attended a meeting of the Watch Committee and urged that the matter should be reconsidered. The committee decided that the recommendation must stand.

Some idea of the importance of mechanisation in public cleansing services is to be gathered from figures relating to Manchester Corporation, where over 250,000 tons of refuse are collected and disposed of annually, and 1600 workmen are employed. Mechanical transport has effected a saving of £71,000 per annum over the average expenditure for 1927-1931, when horses were largely employed.
