WORLD SHIPBUILDING
BRITAIN STILL LEADS SATISFACTORY POSITION DECEMBER QUARTER FIGURES (Received January 9.35 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 15 Britain, with 596,834 tons, continued to lead the shipbuilding countries in the amount of tonnage under construction in the quarter ended December 31, according to Lloyd's returns. Although this is a slight decrease compared with the previous quarter's tonnage it is 30 per cent greater than the tonnage under construction in the December quarter of 1933. The total world tonnage being constructed amounted to 1,251,722 of which 47.7 per cent was being built in Britain and Ireland. The world total declined 60,000 tons compared with the September quarter, but was 65 per cent greater than in the December quarter of 1933.
