WORK AT RICCARTON
TRENTHAM PREPARATIONS GOOD DISPLAY BY VINTAGE NORTHERN TRIP TO BE MADE [[by telegraph OWN correspondent"! CHRISTCHUKCH, Tuesday Conditions were very favourable for training operations at Riccarton to-day and all horses to race at Trentham next ■week were seen in action. The inside of the trial grass was open for fast work, but most trainers preferred the plough, which had been watered overnight and was on tlie slow side for the early morning workers. Variant and Hostis, who have done the bulk of their work of lato on the course proper, following barrier practice, were given easy exercise. Both are very well and the latter,is likely to race prominently at Trentham. Fracas ran six furlongs comfortably in 1.16 3-5, the first three in 3(5 4-5s and the first half-mile in 50s. She should collect more honours next week. Silly Owl and r. , "rust covered five furlongs in 1.6. Rocket and Knock Out strode over seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5. Rocket went pleasingly and may effect a surprise during the next week's programme, Horowhenuu and Horotiu finished together after recording 1.5 3-5 for five furlongs. Both are booked to race at Trentham. Cup Bearer recorded 1.5 for a similar task and her stable mate Penelope was given half-pace work over two circuits. On. tha middle track Sam Smith easily accounted for Anvil over six furlongs in 1.17 and Hostile, assisted by Doiran, covered the same ground in 1.18 3-5. Sam Smith and -Hostile were not accepted for on the first day at Trentham, but may bo on the scene later in the week. Vintage gave a good display in rurvinj; a mile alone in 1.43 3-5. The first two furlongs were covered in 24 4-ss, three in "s, four in 49 2-ss, and six in 1.17. He is >o go north in company with Tunneller on Saturday. The latter, who is not a free track worker, was beaten by Final Shot over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Capital Showing Form
. Colossian and Capital ran five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. The latter would appear to have bright prospects of winning a race at Trentham. The Shambles. Love in the Mist gelding in F. D. Jones' stable, and Let' Fly. by Arrowsmith from Palestrina, covered five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. A name for the former, who is an acceptor at Tren--8 been decided upon. Some Shamble showed further attractive form by again comfortably beating Silver Sight over seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. He should make a bold showing in the Anniversary Handicap on Tuesday, in which he will be ridden by G. Humphries, who will ako be on Emissary and Tunneller. . Cranford was under restraint in recording 1.7 3-5 for five furlongs. This gelding looks brighter just now than for some time past and Riccarton track-watchers would not be surprised to see him win the Telegraph Handicap. Abdication and Bella Rosa ran five furlongs 1.6 2-5. The former, who is to go to Trentham, is gradually coming to hand, but will hardly be ready to show up in his first engagement at the meeting. Tout la Monde and Invoice strode over at a working gallop. Nightly and Polydora were again associated over six furlongs, taking 1:17 4-5, the last three in 38 3-ss. Polydora received about a stone in weight and Nightly finished a neck in front, his display being more encouraging than on Saturday last. Polydora; was taken out of tho Wellington Cur> and will not go north. Emissary turned on a burst of speed between the mile and the half-mile post on the trial grass. Moonbeam joining in over the last three furlongs. ■ The former's time was 48 3-ss. Silver Ring made his reappearance on tracks and, ridden by D. O'Connor, was sent out to cover a circuit on tho sand at half pace. Nearing the end of his task, however, he crossed his legs and turned a somersault, his rider fortunately escaping injury. Silver Ring bore evidence of contact with the hard ground, receiving abrasions on top of his head, but otherwise the fall is not considered likely to have any serious effect. Rebel Chief also renewed his acquaintance with the tracks and was given easy work in tho middle of the course. He in at present in very solid condition, but. will not require much time to got back to racing form. He will probably be given some racing at the smaller autumn meetings, preparatory to contesting the Great Easter Handicap, a race that should suit this speedy Robespierre gelding. Young Jumper's Good Showing
Lady Lucas, in H. Rama'e stable, is an addition to the ranks of the jumpers and dunng the past week has given some creditable displays over pony hurdles and to-day, ridden by W. Lawson, negotiated four fences in a manner suggesting that she would not be troubled by larger obstacles. She is a four-year-old by Lucullus from Country Air and is a half-sister to Free Air. who has made good as a jumper. The two-year-old Iliad colt. Greek Shepherd, continues to make satisfactory progress and has grown into a most impressivo youngster. . A patient policy has been adopted with him and' his work has not extended beyond short . sprints. In one of these to-day ho finished on terms with Sky Rover, after covering three furlongs on the plough in good time.
Heather Glow and Haere Tonu looked well after their West Coast trip, when paraded to-day. and were given easy work on the sand. Both are to go to Trentham and the former, who is in great order just now, will have to be seriouslv considered in the Apprentices' Plate on Tuesday, especially if E. Leckio is secured for him. Great Scar was withdraw from the Wellington Cup in favour of the Anniversary Handicap, in which his chunce would appear to be more favourable. Ht lightened up a good deal on the Ellerslie trip and has not been asked to do muclf strenuous work since, his task to-day being confined to long, strong work, with a short sprint down the straight. He should be freshened up again by next week, but on th.e other hand there is no doubt he is feeling the effects of age and is not likely again to show his brilliancy of a few seasons back.
HORSES FOR ADDINGTON BLUE MOUNTAIN, IMPROMPTU The Auckland-owned paccyrs Blue Mountain and Impromptu, who raced at Wellington last week, have gone on to Addington to fulfil their engagements on Saturday. Blue Mountain, who was second in tho Kia Ora Handicap, will be driven in the South by S. M. August, but after the meeting the grey will go into J. Bell's stable at Ashburton. Impromptu ran third in the Summer Handicap at Hutt Park, and a repetition of that effort should give him good prospects of success at Addington. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Mr. E. H. Cucksey • leaves for Wellington on baturday to be present at the yearling sales and lo see his filly Galilee run in thu WelliDeton Slakes. Mr. A. D. Potter has returned to Ellerslie after a brisf visit to Gisburne. He inspected a large number of young horses, but so far lias not made any additions to his team. Tho addition to E. C. Rae's team at Ellerslio is The Sun. This horse won races earlier in his career, but of late hue been a failure. Ho is likely to be tried its a jumper. J- C 4 Lambess has Red Flame and tho Acre—Purple Heather gelding going along steadily, but neither is very forward and it may be nearing tho autumn before either la ready to show any form. Ccurt Armour, an older brother to the two-year-old Armacourt, is being trained at Ellerslie by G. Jenkins. He has done a fair amount of preparatory work in satisfactory style, but as yet has not been seriously tried. G. Holland's latest addition is the two-year-old Palardo, by Paladin—Tamarado Palardo has run " qrcon" ir. bei races to date, but she has shown speed and Holland rr.ay get results with her later on. F. Gilchrist recommissioned the two-year-old Fleetwind after the summer meeting and she is among the entrants for the Takapuna meeting. Fleetwind was one cf the earliest of the Ellerslie youngsters to allow speed, but after she had raced a couolo of times it was decided to ease her up. Delice. who won two races in decisive fashion at the Westland meeting last month, broke down badly in the second atlemot and some time will elapse before she will be able to resume racing. Elbnnor, from the same Btable, has been eent home for a spoil. Heather Glow's win at the Reefton meeting* brought -his stake earnings to £505. bo that he is now out of the hack class. Ho will, however, be able to run out his hack engagements at the Wellington meeting. These include the Apprentices' Handicap on the first day. TAKAPUNA SCRATCHINGS Hunting Bag and Parquet have been scratched for their engagements on the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting.
