RIFLE SHOOTING

AGGREGATES AT PENROSE GOOD SCORE BY SIMMONDS Excopt for a slight haze caused by the heat, conditions were excellent at Penrose on Saturday, and there was a large muster of riflemen who are now preparing for the big event at the end of the month. Taken all through the aggregates were not high, the targets shading badly at 600 yds., especially tho sand and blue. Practically all would be better turned a trifle into the sun and the work should be taken in hand at the end of tho season. The range is now well flagged, and with the improved 900 yds. mound, all that is needed is an improvement in the sighting in tho manner indicated to give the best results the range is capable of. The Auckland champion, H. Simmonds, was in brilliant form on Saturday, and secured one of the easiest of victories. Making a "possible" at 500 yds., he ran up 5, 5, 5,'4, 5, 5, 4, 4, 5, 5—47, at the second range, the best score for tho season. E. J. C. Boston, an ex-champion, was in second place. He struck trouble at the second range after having 5, 5, 5, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, at 500 yds. Reston's consistency will carry him a long way on Anniversary Day. A. G. Robertson gave his usual solid display and will be hard to displace from the City A team. J. Cossar had another fine score to his credit last week and is shooting excellently, considering his age. A feature of his shoot at 500 yds. was his six bull finish for 46, and ho followed this with 45 when many of the older shots were struggling hard for smaller scores. Several of the best from each club were together, but A. M. Jenkinson did better than his card of 45 at each range indicates, as he had two "magpies" at 500 yds. T. Bevan had a nice score here with 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5.
