STATE AID TO HOSPITALS
Sir, —At the blessing ceremony of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital on Friday last it was stated that it was hoped that the Government would grant this private hospital financial assistance. To the mind of many taxpayers this would be an unwise step, as it would open the door to all and sundry to expect such aid. Private hospitals compete with our public institutions, and if the Roman Catholic Church likes to build, equip, and tun private hospitals for its own adherents or profit, it cannot expect to be financially assisted by the State, which might just as well assist private schools, colleges and other institutions. While these private hospitals do a lot of good work, yet if they fail to be self-support-ing they should close in preference to getting help from the State. Protestant .
