DEATH AT NINETY

MRS. JANE BROWN RESIDENT OF NORTHCOTE The death of Mrs. Jane Brown, widow of Mr. Joseph Brown, occurred at her residence in Princes Street, Northcote, yesterday. She would have reached her 91st birthday on Friday, having been born at Stroud, England, 011 January 18, 1844. Mrs. Brown, who had lived at Northcute for the last 30 years, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson, of Gloucester, where she was married to Mr. Joseph Brown in 1867. They left England with their five children in the barque Easterhill, Captain Evans, arriving at Auckland in 1882. Mr. Brown was engaged in the furniture business of Mr. Tonson Garlick, and subsequently founded the firm of J. Brown and Sons, in Karangahapo Road. Mrs. Brown, was first associated with the Wellesley Street Baptist Church, and then with the Baptist Tabernacle in Upper Queen Street from its opening by the Rev. Thomas Spurgeon. On the occasion of his first official visit to Northcote last March, the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, mentioned that Mrs. Brown.-was an old neighbour "of his—or rather, his father's —in Gloucestershire," and he extended his congratulations to Mrs. Brown on having earlier in the year celebrated her 90th birthday. His Excellency sent Mrs. Brown an autographed photograph of himself ami Lady Bledisloe, with the message: "With congratulations and good wishes from an erstwhile neighbour in the Old Land. March 3, 19.'M. Bledisloe."

There were eight in the family and those living are:—Mr. S. W. Brown, of Onehunga, Mr. J. W. Brown, of Takapuna, Mr. H. F. Brown, of North'•ote, Mrs. C. J. Smith, of Northootc, and Miss Alice Brown, of Northcoto. Another son, Mr. H. B. Brown, was drowned with his younger son, Donglas Robert Brown, at the mouth of the Orewa Biver in April last. There are 13 grandchildren and two great-grand-children.
