JAPANESE VESSELS
LONG VOYAGE RESUMED CAUSE OF RETURN UNKNOWN Thirty-nine hours after leaving Auckland the Japanese steamers Komata and Kaimanawa returned at four o'clock yesterday morning and anchored in the Hauraki Gulf, about five miles outside Rangitoto Reef. The vessels remained at anchor until four o'clock yesterday afternoon, when they resumed their voyage. It is not known why the steamers returned as they did not communicate with the shore. After leaving the harbour for Japan on Friday night the vessels made very slow progress until they were about midway between Rangitoto Reef and Tiri Tiri Island, where they remained at anchor for about 12 hours, leaving the anchorage for sea at one o'clock on Saturday afternoon. It Avas thought they had anchored to readjust the towing gear. The return of the vessels yesterday morning caused considerable interest on the waterfront. Roth steamers were sold by the Union Company to shipbreakers and the Komata is towing the Kaimanawa to Japan, where the ships are to be dismantled for scrap metal.
