OBITUARY

CAPTAIN J. G. POOLE

The death occftrred in Auckland yesterday of Captain James Godfrey Poole, well known as a captain of ferry boats on the Waitemata Harbour for many years. Captain Poole was born at Russell, Bay of Islands, 65 years ago. He was a grandson of Captain Hansen, master of the Rev. Samuel Marsden's sailing ship Active, which brought the early missionaries to New Zealand. His aunt, Mrs. Hannah King Letheridge, born in 1814, was the first white woman born in New Zealand. Captain Poole was associated with the Devonport Steam Ferry Company for the last 34 years, and most of the time he resided with his family at Devonport. He is survived by his wife and six children, Mr. W. Poole, Mr. J. Poole, Mr. G. Poole, Mrs. J. Hodgson, Mrs. S. Houghton and Mrs. D. Paterson.

MR. R. 0. FOWLER [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday The death occurred at Hamilton today of Mr. R. C. Fowler, at the age of 67 years. Since coming to Hamilton in 1917 Mr. Fowler had been a wellknown figure in the public life of the town and had served for 15 years on the Hamilton Domain Board. He also served for many years on the Hamilton Beautifying Society, and for a time ho was a member of the board of governors of the Waikato Diocesan School for Girls. Born in Madras, India, Mr. Fowler was educated in England at King's School, Warwick, King's College, London, and Exeter College, Oxford. He was prominent in sport as a young man and won many athletic trophies at Oxford. Ho came to New Zealand in 1892 and took up sheepfarming in tho Wairarapa district, which he represented at Rugby football. In 1901 he married Miss Olive Tully, of Greytown. Since he came to Hamilton Mr. Fowler had lived principally in retirement. He is survived by his wife. \ MR. L. F. FETCH [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TE KUITI, Thursday The death occurred yesterday of Mr. L. F. Fetch, a well known resident of the King Country and Feilding districts. Deceased was educated in England and took the degree of M.A. with honours at 'Cambridge University. He came to New Zealand 50 years ago. and became a school inspector on the West Coast of the South Island. Some time later he was engaged in farming in the Feilding district, and came to Te Kuiti six years ago. He leaves a son, Mr. A. L. Fetch, of Whangaroi, and a daughter, Mrs. H. N. Cooper, of To Kuiti.
