YOUNG MAN JUMPS IN RIVER RECAPTURED BY POLICE [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] GREYMOUTH. Thursday A young man, Cyril Martin, aged about 22, who was arrested on warrant at Wanganui a few days ago, and who was brought to Greymouth yesterday under police escort, escaped from the Greymouth Gaol early this morning and took a taxi to his home at Kotuku. The escape was discovered about nine o'clock

Soon afterwards the police were advised of Martin's whereabouts and two constables were despatched to the locality. They found Martin in his father's motor-car coming in the direction of Greymouth, the father driving. As soon as the car stopped Martin jumped out and dived into the river, which runs closu to the road there. A strong current washed Martin to the bank, however, and ho was recaptured by the constables.
