MANUREWA "AT HOME"

MANY GUESTS ENTERTAINED BEAUTY OF BUSH AND LAWN Although it had been raining quite steadily at times in the city on Saturday afternoon, it was surprising to find that there was very little falling in the outskirts and the many guests who attended the At Home given by Mrs. David L. Nathan at The Hill, Manuiewa, were able to walk about the j beauMAil grounds without hindrance j weather. They were received by Mrs. Nathan, with Mr. Nathan, in the inner hall of the house, Mrs. Nathan wearing a frock of black ripplelined silk net over black cire satin, the close-fitting skirt finishing with a diagonal frill falling from one side to the hem at the back. With it was worn a picture hat of honev-coloured straw trimmed with a narrow band of black velvet ribbon round the crown. Her guest, the Dowager Lady Swaythling, of England, who has just completed a tour of the Dominion, wore a frock of black and white wave-lined georgette with a triangular wrap of black velvet trimmed with black fnr and a black picture hat banded with black velvet ribbon. Mr. Nathan and his son, Mr. Dennis Nathan, who had returned earlier in the week from an overseas visit, were cordially welcomed by those of their friends who had not yet seen them. The beautifully laid out garden, which has such a wonderful setting of native bush, was looking very lovely and not in the least jaded after the many days of heat and dryness that have been experienced. The smooth wide-stretching lawns were green and fresh, the flower beds and borders a mass of brilliant colouring and the trees and flowering shrubs that bordered the drive very picturesque and graceful with their leafy greenness harmonising so delightfully with the brightness of the flowers. It was a garden that combined the intimacy of quiet secluded nooks with that of wide open vistas where the eye rested on rounded hills and distant sea. One of these quiet spots was the lily pond sunk in the midst of a lawn with a charming setting of cream and brown broken flags, among which grew clusters of purple Japanese irises and other lovely things. Below them in the water grew the lilies —wine-red, cream and palest blue, half closed through lack of sunshine. The rock garden with its infinite variety of creeping plants that blossomed among the angular roughshaped rocks was another spot that attracted many visitors, who marvelled at the alpine plants that grew so bravely there away from, their natural habitat. In the glass-houses were to be seen some of the aristocrats of the flower kingdom—exotic orchids that had been brought from South Africa, India and other Eastern countries, begonias that were magnificent in colour, variety and size and a wealth of fern, the strangest of this last being the adder tongue —a most : descriptive name for a fern that was not the least like a fern. Threats of approaching rain did not deter the guests from making their way into the native -bush, richly pungent with the woody scent that rain brings out from moss and trees, and which made such an appropriate setting for the Maori summer-house that was hidden id the heart of it. Almost in front of it was a magnificent puriri, and graceful fern trees hall concealed, it from sight. On. its heavy dark red beams were some admirable examples of old-time Maori carving now unfortunately in danger of becoming a lost art. Te a > with delicious ices and strawberries and cream,, was served on the loggias and on the lawn.
