ELLERSLIE MEETING

FIELDS FOR BOXING DAY CUP AND RAILWAY CONTESTS SCRATCHING OF SYNAGOGUE Excellent fields arc carded for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie 011 Boxing Day, and some fine contests are assured. Horses from practically all parts of the Dominion will be competing and interest in the racing will be widespread. Most of the best handicap horses will be competitors in the Auckland Cup, and the cream of New Zealand's sprinters wi'l bo seen in action in the Railway Handicap. As usual these races are exciting considerable interest in all parts of the Dominion and each bears a very open aspect. The fact that there are few proved stayers in the Auckland Cup' makes the solution of a difficult problem all the more complicated, and some of the most-fancied horses have yet to prove their real worth at two miles. As far as the Railway Handicap is concerned the most important development yesterday was the scratching of the three-year-old Synagogue at 12.25 p.m. There is an array of brilliant sprinters engaged, and luck in the draw for post positions may bo an important factor. It is certain that fancies will take a wide range and the race is sure to attract spirited speculation. ' The fields now stand as follows: —

yesterday. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE * _______ TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The Franklin Racing Club has fixed the prize-money for its annual meeting at X ukckolie on March 2 at £IO2O. Gay Marigold has now won ton races and £1757 in prize-money, of which £BBO has been obtained this season. Happv Landing, 111 the charge of IC. "Wileon, left Napier by express yesterday moining for Auckland. lie will stait in the Stakes, his rider being . Broughton. Gaine Carrington, who has not raced since he won the Williamstown Stakes in tebrunry, has been put into training again under C. T. Godby at Caulfield. He luh done weil' during his holiday, and it is hoped to race him again :.n the autumn. Rocket, disappointed when he failed to run prominently in the Duke of Gloucester Handicap at Trent ham list week but he is a solid stayer and, if tho Auckland is a truly-run race, he may take a lot or beating at the finish. Rocket is full ot muscle and will lack nothing on wie scoie of condition. Without being to mike fast I lime, the three-year-old Kelly has been ; going' attractively i" his work, and r. Uil- | christ should havo iim splendidly fit to ; content the Queen's Plate,on Boxing Day. Kelly will have to oppose some well-perfo.-Ried hacks, but he can be relied upon to give a good account of himself. Final Shot, who is engaged in both tho Queen's Plate and the Christmas Handicap at EUerslio on Boxing Day, is a four-year-old mare by Winning Hit from Rivalry, and belongs to » family that has produced some good winners. She has not shown «ny form this season but she won live races last season. Her last victory was achieved in" the Thornclon Handicap at Trent ha in in January, when she carried 7.u and ran a milo in 1.39. When Sea Fox finished second to Gay Sheila in the Great Northern Guineas last year he gave promise of making a good performer, but he failed to do as well as : expected during the remainder of tho season. A fall he had on one occasion apparently affected him, but ho has struck form this season and in his present condition lie should be capable of performing well at tho coining meetiiii*-
