* I 'Twos Christmas Eve, and Mary G&J 1 said ' m I To Mummy's great surprise, » "I think it's time to go to bed!" Then yawned, and rubbed her \ eyes. f V " You see," said Mary, "Santa V&y CI a us •* "I s bringing me some toys; >2// "And I must be asleep, because L " He cannot bear a noise." \ And when she'd put her nightie She tumbled into bed, And two small socks were laid upon The pillow near her head. Then Mummy smoothed a wayward curl Which ivould get in the way, 4 And gently kissed her little girl, And softly stole away. When Santa Claus came bye/IV W ' and-bye il V TI Q scratched his hoary locks, J & The toys were large; he dare not try ] To get them in those socks. u

He. had a lot of other calls i r .J And wondered ivhat to do; I U A Rabbit, Chick, and toys and 1 >lHj. . balls, 1 And all for Mary, too/ ]!/(&■ Then Santa laughed as if he'd He made two tiny caps Of Mary's socks! He loves a joke. He though, "She'll laugh, n perhaps." Tv When Mary woke, she cried j V tvith glee, I \ 1 "Oh! Mummy, Mummy, Quick! j "J'ust look what Santa's brought for vie, "This Rabbit and this Chick!" j ■ The little socks which Mary wore Upon her dainty feet, The Chick and Rabbit proudly bore As caps, arid looked so sweet. / She gathered up her other toys, '/IV And said, when she had done, j lIV "If Santa Claus does not like f Bl noise, f 'l' < < L "He's very fond of fun," j '
