THE CITY MARKETS
STRAWBERRIES IN DEMAND PLENTY OF VEGETABLES Apples were again dull of sale at the City Markets yesterday, but tomatoes met with a good demand. Many lines of fruit came in too green, selling at low prices. There was a keen inquiry for strawberries, which realised advanced rates, and cherries and apricots also were in demand. Choice dessert plums sold well. Low rates ruled for black currants, which were in heavy (supply. Large quantities of potatoes and root vegetables were available, and there were good supplies of other vegetables in season. Good quality green peas sold well. The supply of poultry was very heavy, the demand being keen for most lines. Turkeys were plentiful and cheap. CANTERBURY MARKETS HARVEST PROSPECTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] CHRISTCHURC'H, Friday The interest of merchants is mostly in the prospects of the coming harvest. The hot sun this week is bound to affect the yields unless rain comes with little d<>la'v. Oats now ripening will be bleached in some districts and spring sown wheat is likely to be seriously affected, but the bulk of the autumnsown area of wheat is looking quite ■well and requires only a good shower to average satisfactory yields. There is no inquiry for oats. A good deal of reaping is now in progress. The potato crop is looking well. It is yet too early in the season for the weather to affect it adversely. Reports from the peninsula arc that exposed faces have been burnt up by the dry spell and n promising cocksfoot yield of two months ago will not be realised. The crop iH still looking fairly well on the shady faces. The acreage of ryegrass closed for seed is likely to be less than was estimated some' weeks ago. Farmers have had to graze some of their fields originally destined for seed. WHEAT IN AMERICA CHICAGO, Dec. 20 Wheat.-—December, 5)7 3-8 cents a bushel; May, 98* cents; July, 92} cents.
