UNEMPLOYMENT TAXES
Sir. —As one hears in these days a good deal about the healthy condition of unemployment funds and of extra payments to the unemployed, it is surely time the collection of the tax was made less sweeping. Take, for example, the many holders of a few acres of land trying to make a living from poultry, fruit; vegetables, etc... who with present prices show yearly profits of no more and often less than the income of an unemployed man. These struggling smallholders are liable for the quarterly levy and the usual tax on every uennv of income. No allowance is made for the help of a wife and quite inadequate depreciation '" plant and buildings is only allowed it' accounts are kept by double-entry and duplicates made for Post and Telegraph Department accountants. Surely it would not be impossible to give some relief to taxpayers with verv small incomes. Equity.
