HAMES VALUATIONS
PROCEDURE UNDER NEW ACT
COMMISSIONER'S EXPLANATION
[bt telegraph—OWN co&bespoxdent] THAMES. Friday
Thames borough ratepayers have recently been notified by the ValuerGeneral of the valuations placed on their properties for rating purposes, and as is usual opportunity is given for objections to be raised and heard by an Assessment Court. -
When questioned regarding the nature of the objections that could be raised to the valuations entered against properties the borough commissioner, Mr. C. L. Grange, said that under the provisions of .the Thames Borough Commissioner Amendment Act, 1934, the Valuer-General had to compile a special valuation roll for the borough in- substantially the usual way, but instead of valuing the properties he had merely to insert the valuation entries of 1931 as decided after the Assessment Court had finally considered the objections. This procedure, the commissioner said, had the effect of excluding any subsequent revaluations under Section 45 or 50 of the Valuation of Land Act, 1925, or Sections 3 or 4 of the Valuation of Land Amendment Act, 1933. The valuation entries were then notified to those concerned, and opportunity was given for objections, which would be heard by an Assessment Court in the usual manner, but the grounds for objections were : strictly limited to the ground that the valuation objected to was unfair or incorrect in relation to other valuations appearing ins the ordinary valuatiofi roll of 1931. t
