FUND FOR OVERSEAS AUCKLAND CENTRE'S ATTITUDE OFFICIALS FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Strong opposition to the proposals advanced by the council of the NewZealand Amateur Swimming Association for the reorganisation of the asso- ' cation's finances was expressed by a meeting of the Auckland Swimming Centre last evening. The proposals were described in a letter from the treasurer to the association, Mr. F. G. Dunn, who recommended the transfer of about £4OO from the accumulated funds to the educational fund. The funds affected would be the overseas representation fund, £154 lis Id, the secretariat establishment fund, £l3O 14s, and the accifmulated fund, £220 4s 7d. . -1 Members of the centre objected most emphatically to interference with the overseas representation fund. It was mentioned by Mr. Dunn that this fund had been estab- * »lished for two purposes. One was to promote tours by overseas champions, and the othfcr was to send New Zealand awimmeia to Olympic and Empire Games. , Mr. Dunn proposed the retention of £IOO for the former purpose, but he considered that no further expenditure should be incurred in sending New Zealanders abroad, as such tours were of little value. Tlia money thus saved, he suggested, should be used for educational purposes. • - Mr. L. Brighton said he was definitely against the proposals, ae he considered the overseas fund should be maintainad. There were two objects in educational work. One was to issue certificates of competency, and the other was to send champions abroad so that they might pass the knowledge they gained on to young swimmers. .. The centre itself was inaugurating a similar fund to make possible the sending of swimmers abroad and the bringing of champions from overseas. Mr. Brighton expressed the opinion that untold advantages would be gained from bringing the very best overseas swimmers to New The chairman, Mr. R. M. Sheffield, said he, too, was against the council's proposal in regard to the overseas fund. The overseas fund was of very great advantage. If it were abolished and swimmers were at any time eent abroad, the onus would fall upon the centres to provide finance. The Auckland Centre's delegate to the council should, ho thought, be instructed to vote against the proposal. , • Mr. L. Kenny said that as the fund had been accumulated for overseas representation, it should be used for purpose. Mr. D. Saunders said the New Zealand Council's attitude seemed to be tkat the whole of the Dominion would not benefit from the experience gained by a swimmer's going abroad. Only the centre with which he was associated would derive any advantage. The council, therefore, thought, no doubt, that the centre should bear the cost.' ~ . . Mr D. Mulvihill expressed the opinion that educational work, in was a national responsibility and should bo 'maintained by the Government. Mr. T. V. Fitzpatrick suggested that as the Auckland Centre was establishing .its own overseas fund, and Auckland 6wnnmers had contributed to tie council s fund, this body, if determined to give eliect to its proposals, should be advised that as the overseas fund had been raised for a specific purpose, the amount paid by each centre should be refunded to that centre. Ihis suggestion was adopted. ' The retnrns submitted by the Pukekohe Club on its activities durng laflt season were receiveid. The club reported & membership of 123. * The starting of the centre s ,-omcial -at the North Shore Club's, carnival on Tuesday evening was criticised by Mr. U. Moore, the Ponsonby Club's delegate. He was supported by Mr. D. Mulvihill, who alleged that checking by stop-watches had shown that the scratch competitors h»d been handicapped more heavily. • v ,- The chairman, Mr. R. M. Sheffield, said, the official was performing his duties for the first time, and would no doubt do better again. He added that, according to the centre'-s rules, an official, once appointed, must hold office for one year, Tinless notice was given to remove him. -Mr. Moore therefore announced his intention of moving to this effect at the . next meeting. .' , - , * , . The meeting decided that gold medais should be awarded to winners of AncsUnd championships, and that, when there at least six contestants in an event. trophy, valued at 10s 6d, be awarded to the runner-up. . , - Officials to act at the centre s championship carnivals were appointed as follows: Director. Mr. R. M. Sheffield; referee, Mr. J. Enwright; swimming judges. Messrs. -JU. Kenny. H. P.' Keys, T. Hobbs-Jones. TV. Fitzpatrick; diving Judges, Messrs. tt. Moore, L. Kenny, P. Worden. B. M. Enwright was appointed to select the course for the Anne _Kellerman Cup race, which will be swum in Auckland ,on February 19 as one of tlie events of tiio New Zealand championship meeting. The New Zealand Council's failure to advise the centre of the compulsory dives selected for the New Zealand championships was commented upon by Mr., .U. Brighton, who said Auckland divers were being hampered through not knowing wht was required of them. It was decided to request the New Zealand Council to provide this information urgently.
