TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA
Sir, —The people of New Zealand should be seriously asking " Wither aro we bound?" It might be answered: "To national insignificance beneath Australia's shadow." There was a time when Australian butter classed well below ours. We went to Ottawa with financial prestige. Can it be doubted we aro losing ground to Australia? Australia is subsidising her primary industries from the profits made by selling us goods, and in doing so reduces the buying power of our only customer. What actually is happening is that Australia is blocking the two avenues of employment of our idle population, industrial and agricultural; if Australia can increase her hold it must be at the expense of Britain or any possible expansion of New Zealand secondary industries. Australia has no use for what we sell. Nominally we sell her wool and hides, but surely only for transhipment. While these tendencies are gathering force to crush New Zealand's future Mr. Savage promenades the country with vague fantastic theories, the attempted application of which would give reviving confidence the knock-out blow. And Mr. Coates appoints professors to lucrative positions. E.L.R
