CANTERBURY WOOL
THE FIRST SALE TO-DAY OFFERING OF 18,400 BALES FINE QUALITY OF CLIP [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday There has been no last minute change in tho overseas situation to make the outlook any more encouraging for the growers whose wool will be sold at the first Christchurch sale of the season to-morrow. There is no reason to expect that the anticipations of the early part of the week will have to be modified. The catalogue totals less than 18,410 bales, although an allocation of 2.5,000 bales was allowed by the wool committee. The wool has come forward in excellent condition and has opened up very much better than that offered at any of the sales last year. There is a certain amount of yolk stain in tho hogget wool and some of the later shorn wool is carrying rather more condition, but there is very little evidence of tenderness this year, and dustiness is almost entirely absent. Most of tho wool is clean, sound and well grown. Growers have held off this sale, apparently following the lead given by growers in the north. However, for the second gale wool has already begun to pour in and the stores are reported to hold now more than enough to fill the allocation. The second sale here has always been the most popular, because it generally attracts some of the butstanding wools for which Canterbury is noted. The wool to be offered to-mor-row is mainly from paddock properties and from the lower foothills which are represented to a great extent by hogget wool. Some exceedingly good lines will be offered. The northern wool sales give only an approximate idea of prices which may be expected in Canterbury, because of the difference in the classes of wool.
