ELECTRICITY STOLEN
METER TAMPERED WITH YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCE
A plea of guilty was entered by a young man, J. E. Collins, when he appeared on summons before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, on a charge of stealing electricity valued at 14s, the property of the Auckland Electric-Power Board. It was stated by Senior-Detective Hall that defendant, who was a garage proprietor, was also an electrician, and lie had wired tho meter so that the batterj'' charger could be operated without the electricity used being recorded. Defendant had not been in trouble previously. Defendant, who asked that his name should be suppressed, said his business would otherwise be ruined. He was sorry for his act. The magistrate, who imposed a fine of £5 and ordered restitution, said defendant had no one to blame but himself. Defendant had been "cheating at both ends." he considered, by selling the electricity that was stolen. Suppression of his name was refused.
