FAMOUS BRITISH BAND

CONCERTS IN AUCKLAND The famous Grenadier Guards Band, under the direction of Messrs. J. and N. Tait, will make its first New Zealand appearance at the Town Hall on Wednesday next. The band was able to tour Australia and New Zealand by special permission of His Majesty the King, and up to the present its concerts have been a series of remarkable triumphs. ''The first night of the Guards Band in Melbourne," wrote a critic, "was reminiscent of grand opera openings and of the concerts of world-famous artists. When the 'curtain lifted ito a gorgeous picture of the seated musicians of the band, the opening number of its programme was the brilliantly-constructed Thanksgiving Festival March, composed by the bandmaster, Major Miller. With it? rich scoring and effective passages of fugato the march deserves its place among the best music. Svendson's Norwegian Rhapsody was also outstanding. Here the clarity and remarkably fine shadings were delightful. The instruments were kept well in bounds and at no time was an exaggerated account given." Concerts will also be given on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday Tuesday. There will be a complete change of programme at each performance. Booking arrangements are adveiv tised.
