NEW SUBURBAN THEATRE
OPPOSITION BY COUNCIL DOMINION ROAD PROPOSAL Opposition to a proposal to erect a picture theatre in Dominion Road for lease to Amalgamated Theatres, Limited, \Vas unanimously expressed by the Mount Eden Borough Council at its meeting last night, when the managers of the two existing theatres in Dominion Road sought the council's help in endeavouring to prevent the erection of a third theatre.
"There is a definite proposal to erect a new theatre at the corner of St. Alban's Avenue and Dominion Road/ in id way between the two present theatres, which themselves are only three-quarters 'of a mile apart," said Mr. E. R. Greenfield, manager of the Capitol Theatre. "Within 9 radius of a mile there are five suburban picture theatres, intluding the two Dominion Roa4 ones." It was certain that if a third theatre was, erected in Dominion Road, all three would net be able to remain open an'd the concern with the greatest buying power in the restricted film market would hare the best chance of survival. A similar plea was made by Mr. W. E. Ford, managor of the Empire Theatre.
The inspector .under the Cinematograph Films Acjr advised that plans of a new theatre to be erected in Dominion Road had been submitted to his office. As they complied with the regulations his department had no grounds for refusing a licence.
The Council decided to do all in its power to prevent the erection of the theatre and to seek legal advice in the matter. ..
