REPAIRS TO CABLES
WORK OF THE RECORDER RETURN AFTER EIGHT WEEKS F After being absent from Auckland for nearly eight weeks repairing cables in Bass Strait and in the Tasman Sea, the cable steamer Recorder returned to port yesterday afternoon. The vessel sailed from Auckland on October 4 for Melbourne to take on board new cable, which was afterward used to replace damaged portions of the Tasmania-Melbourne cable. Commencing at the Tasmanian end of the cable, at the mouth of the Tamar River, the Recorder was engaged at different positions i* Bass Strait where the cable was damaged; The repair work occupied about 14 days, and the vessel later proceeded to Newcastle and bunkered before leaving for the Tasman Sea to carry out repairs to the Sydney-Auckland cable. She first commenced repairing the cable about midway between Australia and New Zealand. After that was completed she was engaged in lifting and repairing the cable off the New Zealand coast gome miles from Muriwai Beach, where the shore end is attached. The work in the Tasman Sea was considerably delayed by boisterous weather, which necessitated her putting in to New Plymouth last week to replenish stores. After the vessel left New Plymouth ..the weather improved and the* work was completed without further interference.
Tho Recorder is now at her moorings at Devonport, where she will remain until her services are required again for further cable repair work.
