EXHIBITION OF SKETCHES

AUCKLAND CLUB'S DISPLAY MANY INTERESTING WORKS Some artistic and unconventional examples of art are represented in the exhibition by members of the Auckland Sketch Club at the new rooms of the Auckland Society of Arts. The 52 pictures include water-colour paintings, oil paintings, black and white studies, etchings and lino cuts, all tastefully displayed. A feature of some of the exhibits is the success of efforts to break away from conventional ties of desiign and colour without producing bizarre results. Prominent among the exhibits are Vernon Brown's courageous watercolour of Maraetai Beach," and Miss D. Vallance Young's water-colour of the Symonds Street windmill, viewed from an unusual angle. A delightful painting in the orthodox style is Mr. F. Thorpe's study of the stone steps leading from Durham Street West to Albert Street. It invests a commonplace piece of stonework with an old-world charm. Other artists represented are Alice F. Whyte, Bessie Christie, Joan Edwards and Amy Dawson. The lino cuts in the display are by the chairman of the club, Mr. E. Wadham. His self-portrait, which is a striking example of the art, employing angles with amazing effect, is outstanding. Two tones are pleasingly employed in his design of manuka trees. The exhibition is notable for the progress. by younger members, whose work shows considerable promise. There is a fine pen drawing of an athlete in repose by Basil Fenton and some waterfront studies by Joan Edwards reveal a keen understanding of symmetry and colour. Additional interest is lent to the exhibition by the presence of loan pictures bv' prominent , overseas artists, Leslie Ward, Dorothy Woolard, Hesketh Hubbard and Rhona Haszard. The exhibition will be open throughout the week.
