DIRECT; TO ALTERNATING NEW MEANS OF CONVERSION / A close study of electrical progress in Europe is being made Mr. R. H. Hartley, general manager of the Auckland Electric-Power Board, who is on a tour of England and the Continent, according to a letter read by the chairman, Mr. /; W. J. Holdsworth, at yesterday's meeting of the board. Mr. Bartley said he had delved very deeply into the problem ,of changing over from direct current to alternating current. The practice in Great Britain wjs either to scrap all the existing equipment and install new plant or to employ dual supply, with the change extended over a period of about 20 years. the past 18 months tests had been carried out with a new valve which* was, able to change direct curTent to alternating current or vice versa. "The valve is not in commercial use yet, but it is coining," added Mr. Bartley. / .■ ■■
