STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS PRELIMINARY ROUNDS (Received November 25, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 24 The New South Wales lawn tennis championships commenced* to-day in brilliant weather and before a large crowd. The results were: — Men's' Singles.—Hughes beat A. Crawford, 6—2, 6 —o, 6 —l; Perry beat Colvin, 6—4, 6—o, 6—4; Kirby beat Lewis, 7 —6, 9—7, 6—l; J. Crawford beat Holloway, 6 —l, 6 —l, 4—6, & —3; Maier beat Tonkin, 7 —5, 2 —6, 4 —6,.. 6 —o, 6—o; Menzel beat Moore, 7—5, 6—3, 6—ll Quist, Hopman, Moon, Duiilop and Sproule also survived. Women's Singles.—Mrs. Westmacott debated - Miss Coyne (16-year-old player), -7--5, 6—3;: Miss Dearman. defeated 'Miss Peach, 6—o, 6 —l; Miss llound defeated Miss E". Williams, 6—2, 6 —oj, Miss Lyle defeated Miss Dingle, 6—l, 6—2;, Miss „ Hartigan defeated Miss.Blipk, 7—o, 6—3. Men's -Doubles. —Perry and Hughes defeated' Tonkin and Holloway,! 6—4, 3—6—4, "6—3; Kirby and Quist defeated Bromwich and Huxley, 6 —o, 6-2, 7-5. " ~
Women's Doubles. —Miss Round and Mrs. Hopman defeated Misses Campbell and Chew, 6—2, 6—4; ]Mrs. Westmacott and Mrs. .Mpleeworth (Queensland) defeated Misses Wijsdn (New South .Wales) and Macfarlane (New Zealand), 5—7, 6—4', 6—2. The formidable Queensland players had anything but an easy victory, but experience and com-, bination, eventually won the day. , ' Combined Doubles. —Maier and Miss Hartigan defeated Grinstead and Miss Hoclley-Wrigley, 6 —3, 4—6, 6—4. . > Maier and Kirby both, found the fast courts troublesome early, but when accustomed to them they gave brilliant exhibitions. Both Perry's and Hughes' opponents offered little resistance, but. in iihe doubles, the Victorians, Tonkin find Hollowjay, played amazingly well and the "English pair were at their best to win.
