SHAKESPEAREAN WORK V Members of the Auckland branch of the British Empire Shakespeare Society and their friends met in the Penwomen s Club on Saturday evening, the occasion being the annual elocutionary contests for junior members of the society. The work of the competitors, many of whom were under 12 years of age, was of a high standard and bore evidence (if careful preparation. Attired in costumes of the Elizabethan period or in keeping with the characters they represented members also competed for prizes offered for the best curtsey and the be:st bow. Madame Edith Baird, whose pupils performed graceful Elizabethan dances, acted as judge of the bowing and curtseying and Mr. Dennis Johns, of the recitations. Prizes were presented to the successful candidates as follows: —Recitations: Senior, Marie Best; certificate of merit, Winnifred Dromgool; intermediate, Alice McKellar and Ruth Costin. Junior, Shirley Wood: certificate of merit, .Dorothy Reid. Under 10 years: Vickeni Steele; certificate of merit, Bruce McKinney. Special prize (presented by Mrs. Carte-Lloyd) for clear pronunciation of vowels, Dorothy Reid. Curtseving, Olga Hansen. Bowing, Tess Carte-Lloyd (as Malvolio). Essay prize awarded in England for competition throughout the Empire, Dorothy Kelly.
