JL REGENT THEATRE The celebrated actor, George Arliss. forsakes history to show his undoubted , genius in comedy in an outstanding "* film, " The Last Gentleman," which is * attracting large audiences to the Re- •> trent Theatre. In this modern and light , role lie clearly demonstrates that he is an actor of "real ability and his portrayal of a cantankerous old gentleman is perhaps the most Jiuman role in which he has yet appeared. He invests his acting with an exceedingly clever twofacedness of expression and his performance is delightful. Edna May Oliver, Frank Morgan and Charlotte Henry head the supporting cast. The Silly Symphony, " The' Flying Mouse," also is being screened. ST. JAMES' THEATRE The celebrated German singer, V Richard Tauber, appears with great success in the operatic film " Blossom Time," which continues to attract large audiences to St. James' Theatre. In addition to his rendering of some of the best-known of Schubert's melodies, he reveals that he is an actor of ; no mean ability. The songs he sings include " Red Roses," Serenade " and "Thine Is My Heart." The story tells of the unsuccessful romance of the famous composer and is set against the colourful background of Vienna in the post-Napoleonic period. Other prominent roles are taken by Jane Baxter and Carl Esmond. There is an excellent supporting programme and the - Mareo Symphony Orchestra provides a special musical selection. PLAZA THEATRE The new child actress, Nova Pilbeam, scores an outstanding' success in the human drama, " Little Friend," which is enjoying a popular season at the Plaza Theatre. Although the child is - only 14 years of age, she reveals an engaging personality and acts with a sympathy and understanding . which would be remarkable even in more mature actors. The intense emotional strain and the portrayal of the unhappy and puzzled little girl, calls for first-class acting and Nova, with her naturalness and complete lack of self-r consciousness, gives a realistic interpretation. The supporting cast includes Matheson Lang and Lydia Sherwood. There is an excellent selection of short films. ROXY AND TIVOLI THEATRES The outstanding social drama, "Upper World," heads the doublefeature programme at the Roxy and Tivoli Theatres. Warren William appears in the leading role. The second attraction is "We're Rich Again," with Edna May Oliver, Reginald Denny and Marion Nixon. NATIONAL AND PRINCE EDWARD John Barrymore is seen at his best in the comedy romance, " Twentieth Century," which heads the programme which is enjoying a "successful season at the National and Prince Edward r Theatres. He appears as a tempera- 1 mental producer and shows himself to - be a talented comedian. The film is full of witty dialogue and clever ropartee< and makes delightful entertainment. Carole Lombard appears in support of * Barrymore. The second picture is 5 " Name the Woman," with Richard i Cromwell and Arline Judge. The virile. f Western actor. Buck Jones, is seen in ' " The Red Rider," which is also being screened. 3:- • • ' STRAND THEATRE The talented principal of " I Was a Spy," Madeleine Car mil, appears with -• even greater success in the powerful - human drama, "The World Moves On," which heads the programme at the Strand Theatre. The story deals with, the most important events of the past three decades, and in this strongly resembles Noel Coward's " Cavalcade." However, it is not altogether heavy drama for there is a leavening of comedy and romance. The other priucipal part is taken by F.rapchot Tone.

STATE THEATRE A popular player, Dick Powell, heads a particularly strong cast in the outstanding musical filin, " Footlight Parade, which is the main attraction at the State Theatre. There will also be scenes of Messrs. Hewett and Kay leaving Melbourne and of the Melbourne Cup race. STATE THEATRE, DEVONPORT The popular .-English comedienne Gracie Fields appears in the hilarious musical romance " This Week of Grace," which is the main attraction at the State Theatre, Devonport.
