UNIVERSITY FAILS

GOODSIR i BOWLS WELL I■ . With a wicket favouring the batsmen it was expected that University would make a bold bid to pass Parnell's score of five wickets :for 306 in the game on No. 1 wicket.However,'4 the. batting "failed . and University was dismissed for 183, giving Parnell a, via on the first innings. There were four leg-before decisions, and the batting generally .was disappointing. Graham qind Lange opened for University against the bowling of Goodsir and McCoy. The scoring. 'fras slow, for a start, both batsmen taking some time to settle down. After scoring!-11. including one four, Lange was leg-before to Vivian. Schnauer and Graham continued steadily. "With:-his score- at 23 -Graham was; out : leg-beforei sifter a sound and useful' innings, Schnauer and Bush were then associated, hut, after being dropped by Vivian, the former was canght and bowled by the same fieldsman.. Schnauer's total of 29 included fottr boundaries. Jessup was the third legbefore . victim, being out before he had scored.! With four wickets down for 79, University's chances of overhauling Parnoil's score did not look bright. Bush and Garrard, however, were associated in a promising partnership, both batsmen scoring boundaries with nice drives. Garrard was oui to McCoy when the score was 113, he being the bowler's third leg-before victim. Matheson did not" open his score, being dismissed by & good catch by M. "Wallace. /Although Bush appeared ®well set and was playing/ splendid cricket, neither Sutherland nor Pickmere could stay with him, ' both being bowled by Goodsir. Bush continued to bat steadily and Haden remained with- him for a time. With the last man, Wilson, in, Bush attempted to force the pace and hit a fine six. The innings closed in the next over. Although his display, was not as brilliant as usual, Bush played a fine fighting innings when badly needed. Bowling honours for Parnell were evenly divided, although Goodsir, four for 44, bowled -accurately and showed form. There/was still about an hour and a-half before slumps and Parnell elected to bat again and the match came to an uninteresting finish. At stumps Parnell had scored 94 for three wickets.
