STARS OF THE MOVIES
A POPULARITY POLL - V RESULTS IN ENGLAND LONDON. Nov. 22 More than 100,000 film " fans" in Britain replied to a questionnaire to determine the 50 most popular stars. A surprising result is that Hollywood is still dominant, in spite of the big British film " push " of the last .18 months. Jack Hulbert and Gracie Fie!ds were beaten by George Arliss, Clark Gable, Wallace Beery, Clive Brook, Robert Montgomery and Ronald Colman among the men, and by Norma Shearer, the late Marie Dressier, Greta Garbo, Kay Francis, Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn among the women. Norma Shearer, last year's " champion," is still at the top, but Greta Garbo has risen to third place. George Arliss displaced Ronald Colman at the head of the men. Male " fans " go' to see Marlene Dietrich, Kay Francis and Jean Harlow, while women are attracted by Greta Garbo and Katharine HepbUrn. Curiously enough, while Greta Gar ho is- the third most popular, she is also the second " best-hated " star, having- Mae West, Jean Harlow and Joan Crawford as her companions in unpopularity. Douglas Fairbanks, sen., Mary Pickford and Charles Chaplin failed to reach places in the first 50.
