He flew hack to England on his birthday and was the guest of honour at a family gathering in London. Another veteran who is riding .at the top of his form is Joe Childs. The King's jockey was 50 last May. ■-, * TRAINING AT EPSOM LUCKY LOVE WORKS WELL With track ind weather conditions favourable for training at Epsom yesterday morning, several membqrs of S. M. August's team were sent along in useful tasks, a feature being a fine display of free-legged pacing by Lucky Love. Bonnie Pointer, who is under the care of C. Reafdon, was also worked by August, who will drive the mare at Te Aroha. .
Lucky Love (L.-Laver), unhoppled. went away behind Bonnie Pointer (S. M. August) for a mile and a-quarter task and, giving a fine display, finished well. clear, recording a 2.20 gait all the way* Lucky Love is in splendid heart, but will not be required to raco until Christmas. Bpiyije Pointer's time waß 2.57 3-5, .the last, quarter being the slowest Section,' Bonnie Pointer has not yet done-; much solid work Great Chum (L. Laverl gave Mute (S. M. AugUdt) three lengths'v start and beat him over two miles, registering 4.55. Mute, trotting without a mistake, led for over a mile and a-half, when Great Chum improved his position, and. drawing level at the quarter post, the pacer finished too well for his companion. Great Chum ran the last mile in 2.24, the last half in 1.8. Mute trotted the two miles evenly at approximately a 2.29 gait. Miipco ' (L. Laver) went away from the two miles post behind Luminate (S. M. August), and beat him in 4.38. Luminate set; a< steady pace, and when he was warmed up was going nicely in front to the home turn, but Manco made a good dash in the final stages to head him off, and run tho last three furlongs at a 2.16 gait. Luminate may impipve ivith a few more sound tasks, but the nard tracks are not altogether in his favour^
"Willie Derby (S. M. August) and Homeward (L. Lnver) ran two miles in 4.45, being together practically throughout. Neither, was fully extended, but finished from the home turn at a smart clip. "Willie Derby will compete in' the 3.23 race at the sports carnival next Saturday. August's team for Te Aroba will com : prise Manco, Homeward, Luminate. ■ Mute and probably Pink' Lady. '> <- ■ Prince Etawah (R A. Shepherd), unhoppled, worked freely over two cirfcuits. running the last half-mile in 1.11. Although still carrying a good deal of sirrplus condition, he is shaping up gradually," and should soon show' further improvement.
