METHODIST SYNOD
UNEMPLOYED RELIEF BETTER CONDITIONS SOUGHT Better conditions for unemployed men and women were advocated in recommendations placed before the Auckland Methodist Synod at its concluding sitting yesterday by the committee on public questions. Among the recommendations endorsed was the following:—"We strongly urge an adequate standard of relief assistance for unemployed men and women, and re-affirm our belief that the standard of relief afforded hitherto has fallen below what may justly be expected in a Christian country." It was considered that more assistance should be given unemployed women, and more interest taken in children leaving school with little prospect of employment. Excellent work among destitute Maoris in Auckland was shown in the annual report of the Social Service Mission, presented by the missioner, the Rev. A. E. Orr, who said that a gr&at deal of assistance had been given to those in need. A building fund had been inaugurated with a view to the erection and equipment of a suitable social service building for activities in Auckland.
The Rev. G. Frost reported that orphanage work was progressing satisfactorily in the three Methodist homes which cared for 90 children. Income from all sources for the year amounted to almost £3OOO, which met the expenditure in the homes. Good progress in activities at Wesley College, Paerata, was reported by the principal, Mr. R. C. Clark, who stated there were 70 pupils in residence during the past year. Operations on the college farm of 700 acres had been very successful, yielding a substantial profit.
