BYRD IN ANTARCTIC

TRACTOR PARTIES' PLIGHT CREVASSES BLOCK PROGRESS (Received November 19. 8.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. IS A wireless message from the Byrd Antarctic expedition at Little America states: — The expedition's biplane, this time in the charge of Mr. June, made a second flight over the Antarctic wastes in an effort to find a safe passage for the tractor parties from the cul de sac they have reached in tho crevasses, traversing the 81st parallel. After an aerial survey of the area, which lasted about six hours, Mr. June returned and reported that seemingly it would be impossible for the tractors to continue further. In fact, it appeared to be fortunate they had gone as far as they had without misfortune. The tractor parties probably will be recalled, but even returning to the base will be difficult, Mr. June says. This second flight further substantiated the conclusions reached by RearAdmiral Byrd, that the continent is divided by a sea-level passage. More unique crevasse formations were found which positively • indicate a transcontinental seaway.
