FUNCTION AT MANGERE
AVIATORS WELCOMED A large and representative gathering assembled in the Mangere East Public Hall last night to welcome Squad-ron-Leader J. D. Hewett and Fly-ing-Officer C. E. Kay, the pilots of the aeroplane Tainni in the Centenary air race. The function was arranged by a residents' committee in Mangere district, where Flying-Officer Kay has resided since boyhood. The hall was effectively decorated with flags and bunting, and the stage with flowers and greenery. The platform party included: —Mr. S. W. House, who presided, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer R. Mason, Mr. I). Kay, Mrs. Hewett (senior), Mr. W. W. Massey, M.P., Mrs. J. D. Hewett, Mrs. C. E.
Kay, Mr. F. M. Waters, the t\vo pilots, and representatives of the Auckland Aero Club.
Both the pilots were the recipierts of presentations subscribed for by residents in the Mangere district. Congratulatory speeches of welcome were made by several speakers. SquadronLeader M. C. McGregor, who arrived later, was also given a hearty welcome. Bouquets of flowers were presented to Mrs. Hewett and Mrs. Kay by Mrs. W. W. Massey. A musical programme was rendered by the following:—Mr. Howard Hunter * and Mrs. Frost (songs), Miss Arlington (violin solos), Messrs. Green (accordeon duets), Miss E. Griffiths (dances). After supper had been served the evening was continued with a dance. Music was provided by the Mangere East Social Committee's orchestra. Mr. E. C. Ledbrook was in charge of floor arrangements.
