MANAWATU SHOW
THE PIG EXHIBITS Some interesting remarks were made wliilo at the Manawatu Show by Mr. C. S. Mexted, of To Kawa, who judged the Large White and Large Black pig classes, regarding the development of the pig industry in the Waikato during the past two or three years. Mr. Mexted has judged pigs at Hamilton, Morrinsville, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Pukekohe dnring the last twelve months and in all eases the classes had been doubled. Quality had greatly improved, the Waikato farmers having made every endeavour to adhere rigidly to the rules laid down by the breed societies and the requirements of the Home market. He had aimed at encouraging farmers and breeders to produce the utility pig which would continue to prove of greatest value to the country. He stated that in the Waikato Tamworths were in largo demand, while Large Whites also had a big following. Regarding typo improvement, lie stated that Berkshires took pride of place, for they had greatly improved. He had nothing but praise for the manner in which Berkshire breeders in the Waikato had placed their breed not far behind the best of the others. He was confident that there was a great future before the pig industry in the Waikato and in view of the advance mado within the last two years he thought it would not be long before the producers were reaping the benefit of their endeavours.
