COROMANDEL COUNTY
PROPOSED NEW WHARF
DECISION OF COUNCIL PLANS TO BE PREPARED [BY TKMiORAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] COUOMANDEti, Monday The Coromandel County Council, at its meeting to-day received a letter from the assistant engineer of the Public * Works Department, stating that ho had obtained approval for the construction of a concrete ford on the Coromandel-Mercury Bay main highway, about five miles from Coromandel. The work would bo a charge against the maintenance authority of the highway.
The chairman, Mr. N. A. Wollb, expressed approval of tho proposal, which was for the first of five crossings. They obviated a bridge at each stream and if the concreto stood tip to the traffic tenders would probably be called for the construction of others on the same road.
There was a lengthy discussion over the proposal to build a new wharf at Preeco'B Point, to the south of the present wharf site. Strong opposition was expressed by Mr. W. C. Denize, who said the maintenance of the new road would be a drag on the council. The clerk pointed out that, should the wharf bo constructed, the road would bo declared a highway, thus minimising the cost of maintenance. Tho new road would be half-a-mile longer than the present wharf road. Mr. Wells said it was proposed to reclaim an area of 160 acres for an aerodrome site, and the two works would be done together, with the help of the Unemployment Board. The council already had the funds "for the wharf. The work could be done without raising a loan. The scheme had been fully explained to every ratepayer and no objection had been raised. A resolution that an engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the new wharf was carried, Messrs. W. C. Denize and A. J. Denize dissenting.
Tho Public Works Department asked the council to arrange for a resolution to be passed indicating that the council agreed to complete legalisation of the deviation on the Tairua-Whenua-kite road by September, 1935. It should be borne in mind, said the department, that the construction was started before legalisation was completed, primarily for the convenience of the settlers concerned.
The clerk said the Public Works engineer was very urgently stressing the matter.
Mr. J. Hamilton, the riding member, said the agreements had now been signed and would bo finalised.
