AKARANA CLUB'S EVENTS CRUISING RACE TO MATIATIA . " SUCCESS OF SPEEDWELL The Akarana Yacht Club held races for keel yachts ancl centreboard boats to Matiatia, Wailieke, on Saturday afternoon. A hard easterly wind, accompanied by a rough sea, made conditions very unfavourable for yachting, All the boats were reefed and in the race for centreboard boats the 22-footer Rakoa split her mainsail and the 18-footer Surprise carried away her mast. The club's harbour races for small classes were postponed. The race for keel yachtß brought out nine, competitors, which were sent away to a good start, Janet was first over the lino, closely followed by Maybelle, Speedwell, Valdora. Argo and Pandora, lona, Vanitie and Vectis followed at intervals, the lastnamed being 5m late. The direction of the wind gave the boats a dead beat all the way to their destination, and all stood on port tack into Oraltei. where they broke tacks to lay out on starboard. Speedwell, with a trysail and staysail, made good headway, and led the fleet. The majority of the boats stood over toward the Rangitoto shore. Speedwell worked the Tamaki shore and maintained her advantage for the remainder of the race. Off Rangitoto Wharf the order was Speedwell, Janet. Argo, lona, Maybelle, Vanitie. Vectis. Pandora, . The rnce started at 2.40 p.m. The finishing times were:—Speedwell (scr), 6h 36m ss; Argo (sm) 5h 59m 335: Janet (lm), CI) lm 8s; Vanitie (lm), Gh 2m 455; Maybelle (10m), 6h 8m 40s; lona dim), Gh 32m 58s; Pandora (12m), Gh 41m 19s. Vectis and Valdora did not finish. The result on corrected times was: Speedwell, 1; Argo, 2; Maybelle, 3. In the race for centreboard boats Cclo* was first away, and next to her came Surprise. Omatere, Rakoa, Vigilant, Sun and Marie. Maranui was 13} m late. Omatere went into the lead shortly after the sfart, but she had not gone very far before Celox passed her. Off Rangitoto Wharf Celox had a lead of lm 41s from Omatere, which was 10m 19s ahead of Marie. Vigilant, which was holding fourth position, did not cross over to the Rangitoto shore, but worked the Tamaki side of the harbour, and steered a course between Brown's Island and the mainland. This move placed her ahead of Marie. The race started at 2.50 p.m. The finishing times were:—Celox (2m). 5h 43m 255; Omatere (scr), 5h 54m 50s; Vigilant (4tn), 6h 17m 9s- Marie (12m),,6h 19m 9s. Sun and Maranui did not finish. The result pn corrected times was:—Celox, 1; Omatere, 2: Marie, 3. Mr. T. McKay was starter, Mr. T. I/. Thompson judge and Mr. R. D. Neal timekeeper. RACES POSTPONED The races set down for decision on Saturday afternoon by the following clubs were postponed owing to the strong easterly wind and rough sea:—Wakatere Boating Club, Hern© Bay Junior Sailing Club, Akarana Junior Yacht Club. NAVAL SAILING CLUB The Naval Sailing Club held a race for service sailing whalers on Saturday afternoon, starting and finishing off the Naval Base, - Calliope Dock. Six whalers started at 2 p.m. in a fresh easterly breeze, the race resulting in a win for H.M.S. Leith's No. 2 whaler (Captain O. Bevir), with R.N.V.R. whaler No. 1, and H.M.S. Philomel No. 2 whaler, third.

POINT CHEVALIER CLUB The Point Chevalier Sailing Club opened its season yest-erday afternoon with a general handicap for the Rawhiti Cup. The race, which was sailed in a fresh north-westerly breeze, started and finished off the clubhouse. Six boats faced the starter. Belle crossing 'the line first, closely followed by Sea Horse, Rewa, Ngaro and Sea Pixie. Gannet was a few minutes late. Rewa soon went into the lead and, although she was still in charge on the completion of the first lound, she was passed by Ngaro in the second round. The race started at 3.30 p.m. The finishing times'were:—Ngaro (scr), 5h 11m 9s; Rewa (17m), 5b 14m 355; Sea Horse (2m), 5h 18m 395. Belle (2m), Sea Pixie (23m) and Gannet (12m) retired. ' The result an corrected times was:—Rewa, 1; Ngaro, 2; Sea Horse 3. . , TAKAPUNA BOATING CLUB The Takapuna Boating Club held three races for small classes on Saturday afternoon. Owing to the hard easterly breeze a number of the boats failed to put in an appearance. All events started and finished off the -clubhouse. Only Sybila and Meteor started in the race for class T, which resulted in a win for Meteor. The finishing times were:— Sybila (scr), 4h 48m 425; Meteor (12m), 4h 56m. The competitors in the race for class Y were Alha, Rebel and Rogue. Aloha was the only boat to finish and was declared the winner. Her time was 4h 59m 235. There were eight starters in the race for class Z, a close contest being fought out between Trevic, Te Utu and lolanthe. The finishing times were:—Trevic (scr), 4h 32m 435; Te Utu (scr), 4h 34m 17»: lolanthe (2m), 4h 34m 31s; Rio (sm). 4h 41m 28s; Edna (5m 15s), 4h 44m 2s; Nio, Faugh-a-Ballaugh and Tamaki retired. The result on corrected times was:— lolanthe, 1; Trevic, 2; Te ITtu, 3. OTAHUHU SAILING CLUB The Otahuhu Sailing Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon with a race or, the Tamaki River, starting and finishing off the clubhouse- The race was sailed in a hard, easterly breeze over two rounds of the usual course. Allies held the lead in the first round, followed by Champagne and Cyclone. In the final round Champagne touched a mark and retired. The race started at 3 p.m. The finishing times were:—Allies (scr), 4h 10m 15a; Cyclone (10m), 4h 15m 12s; Spindrift (14m), 4h 27m 455; Matariki retired with a broken bowsprit. The result was:—Cyclone, 1; # Allies, 2; Spindrift, 3. SANDERS CUP HONOURS [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Sunday The first race between the 14-foot class boats for the Sanders Cup honours was sailed yesterday afternoon over a windward and leeward course. Six boats competed and Betty led for the greater part of the course and won by more than three minutes from Val. Squib was third and Eileen fourth,
