AUCKLAND CLUB'S AT HOME TRIAL FOURS POSTPONED RACING FOR KOHN TROPHIES Generally an occasion of much interest. in local rowing circles, the Auckland Rowing Club's opening clay At Home on Saturday afternoon was somewhat marred by the unpleasant weather conditions prevailing. However, there was a fair attendance, including a number of lady supporters. Jn a pleasant speech, the club captain, Mr. M. O. Stewart, heartily welcomed those present and expressed regret at the unpleasantness of the conditions. Several members of the Wanganui Union Boat Club's eight-oar crew, which was returning from Australia, were present, and Mr. Stewart congratulated them on their meritorious performances.
Mr. A. K. G. Jackson briefly responded oil behalf of the Wangtinui oarsmen.
During the afternoon a visit was received from the newly-elected patron of the Auckland Rowing Association, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the chairman, Mr. A. C. Norden. Others present, were Messrs. C. D'Authreau and J. C. Aicken, of the Auckland Rowing Association ixecutive, Mr. R. B. Smith, the Dominion representative sculler who returned on Saturday from Australia, Mr. A. M. Wilson, scvoial veteran members and representatives of kindred rowing clubs. It was originally intended to stage trial fours for medals donated by Mr. Rolf Porter, but owing -to the rough water conditions these were abandoned. Several crews, however, manned the boats and indulged in a spin in the comparatively calmer, although somewhat confined, environs of the clubhouse.
WEST END CLUB M. H. D. CONWAY'S CREW WINS In spite of boisterous water conditions on the harbour on Saturday afternoon, the West End Rowing Club held trial fours for the Kohn trophies. Six crews participated, and two heats and a final decided the issue. Messrs. J. Carder and V. MacEarlane were judges. The crews in the first heat were:—W. Parnell (stroke). E. Rockel. T. Brydon, N. Carson, Jennings (cos); J. Parsons (stroke). L. McDonald, E. Macpherson, L. Fearon. Bradley (cox); L. Langham (stroke), Bassett. J. H. Davey, M. Gerraid, Aitchison (cox). Parnell won by 2ft. The crews in the second heat, were:—M. Conway (stroke), J. Barton, N. Bellamy, R. Ailum. S. Bradley (cox); L. Lanibie (stroke), J. Hill, J. Jones L. Keys. Schofield (cox); F. Conway (stroke), N Jerrome. E. Hotham, M. McNeil, L. Bradley (cox). At half-way F. Conway had a slight lead, but M. Conway's crew hero began to show its worth, and, rowing a fine stroke, increased its lead to win by one length. An exciting final resulted Ixl Parnell being defeated by M. H. D. Conway by half a length. CLUBS POSTPONE RACES Club trials arranged by the St. George's, North Shore and Waitemata Clubs were postponed owing to the boiiterous conditions.
