R.V. SUSTAINS „ DEFEAT GREEN LANE TEAM'S SUCCESS MOUNT ALBERT GAINS LEAD The Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association concluded the second series of matches in its senior grade competition at the Domain on Saturday. Several light showers fell during the afternoon, and conditions, generally, were not pleasant. R.V., last season's champion team, sustained a convincing defeat by Green Lane, which showed excellent batting form the previous week. Green Lane compiled 247 in its first innings, while R.V. was dismissed for 142, and in its second innings scored 76 for the loss of two wickets. A four-point win was scored by Green Lane. • A splendid recovery by Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys was responsible for the defeat of Ponsonby, which previously held a good winning position. Ponsonby scored 186, and, after losing three cheap wickets, Mount Albert batted well to compilo 286. Mount Albert now leads in the competition with two wins. Mauukau proved too good a batting side for Mount Roskill. The latter made 156 in its first innings, and lost two wickets for 46 in its second. Mauukau batted freely to score 253, runs for six wickets, declared. Manukau gained four championship pointß. The best batting performance was registered by N. Martin (Manukau), who scored 60 not out. SPLENDID RECOVERY WIN FOR MOUNT ALBERT With throe wickets down for 32 runs, Mount Albert wag faced with a difficult task to reach Ponsonby's firßt innings total of 186. Howell, 2 not out, and Hook, none not out, put up a splendid stand, and carried the score to 118 before the partnership ■was broken. Both batsmen gave sound displays, particularly Hook, who scored, all round the wicket with nice placements. A ninth-wicket stand by Bain, 61 not out, and Wildman, 34, placed the game beyond doVbt. Both batsmen played with plenty of confidence, and the cricket was bright. Bain hit seven fours, and Wildman a six and four fours. The Green Lane bowlers were definitely oh top, and keen fielding gave the attack every assistance. C. Kerr bowled really well to secure seven wickets for 60 funs. An occasional fast ball had the R.V. batsmen beaten. Hunt, the ex-Auckland representative wicket-keeper, batted solidly for 48, although he gave two chances early. His score included eight fours. R.V. was forced to follow on and scored 76 for the loss of two wickets. Cullum. 40. batted nicely. Green Lane showed sll-round improvement and should take a lot of beating in the future. Mount Roskill made 150 in its first innings, and Manukau resumed with four wiokets down for 53, to ( carry the score to 258 for the loss of six wickets before declaring.' A splendid partnership between C. Williams, 60, and Dunning, 58, was a feature of the game. Williams scored freely on the leg side, and hit nine fours. Dunning scored mos.tly with well-directed pull shots. V. Williams, 27 not out, and Martin, 66 not out, punished the bowling. Martin was very aggressive and hit two sites and nine fours. A late start robbed the Matamata A team of a three-point win against Old Boys, but it scored a decisive victory on the first innings by 124 runs ; Matamata B sprang a surprise by defeating To Poi after being 50 runs behind with only eight wickets in hand, while Okauia. after having a grip on the game, eventually lost to Oraka (Putaruru), by 19 runs. Scores were as follows: Matamata A, 202, defeated Old Boys, 80 (Beaver 39. Whelan 11). and 57 for five wickets (Beaver 20, Whelan 19).
