BOWLERS RETURN
EMPIRE GAMES TEAM EXPERIENCES IN BRITAIN DIFFERENCE IN CONDITIONS ■ ———— j [ex TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Wednesday After having represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games in August, three bowlers, G. Carter and G. G. Pollard, of the Carlton Club, Auckland, and W. W. Dillicar (Hamilton) returned to the Dominion to-day by the lluahine. H. Grocott (Carlton) and L. J. Keys (Auckland), the other members of the team, will return to New Zealand shortly. Carter became ill about a week ago and is still under medical treatment. The team, of which Carter was skip, won four games out of nine, defeating Wales, Rhodesia, Australia and Hongkong. Playing conditions were very different in England from those in New Zealand, Pollard and Dillicar said to-day. The Cumberland turf, of which the greens were composed, gave a heavier surface, and they had difficulty in finding touch. Another factor was that the greens were all longer than those in New Zealand, being either 126 ft. or 132 ft., as against the regulation 110 ft. in this country. The English team, who won the competition, had played magnificent bowls and it was safe to say that the four best players in New Zealand could not have won under the conditions existing. Mr. W. E. Airey, of Auckland, who was secretary of the New Zealand bowling team which toured England in 1928, also returned by tho Ruahine.
