AIRSHIP BUILDING
BRITISH INTEREST REPORTED ADVICE FROM GERMAN EXPERTS Considerable mystery surrounds the recent visit to a German Zeppelin works of high officers of the Royal Air Force. It is believed in well-informed quarters that the British Air Ministry still nurtures the idea of building another giant airship to take the place of the ill-fated R.lOl. Tlie R.lOl's sheds at Cardington are being preserved in readiness, and a skeleton airship staff is being maintained. The officers who went to Germany had long consultations with Dr. Eckener and the other German airship experts. They also made a minute examination of all departments of the factory, and discussed tlie reasonj_that are believed to have led to the wrecking of R.lOl, and the best way of avoiding such disasters in the future. Furthermore, parts of the metal structure of the R.lOl are being used at Cardington for experimental purposes, and severe tests are being carried out on them to ascertain how best to modify the framework in any future vessel so that it will bear the extra strain needed.
