FOOTBALL BETTING

ATTEMPT TO PROHIBIT FAILURE IN BRITAIN LONDON, Nov. 5 An amendment by the committee on the Betting and, Lotteries Bill to restore tlie clause forbidding football pool betting was strongly supported in the House of Commons to-day on the ground that the practice was a glaring social evil, to which all the football associations were opposed, and led to gambling by boys and girls. It was said to be creeping into cricket. It was alleged that pressure had been brought to bear on the Government to drop this provision. Several Conservative members appealed for a free vote on the question.

The Home Secretary, Sir John Gilmour, ignored these appeals and intimated that the clause had been withdrawn owing to strong differences on the Standing Committee. The amendment was defeated without a division.
