BOWLING NOTES

PENNANT COMPETITION FIRST ROUND ON SATURDAY CLUB QUOTAS INCREASED MY SKIP The first round of the pennant cornpetition comes lip for decision next, Saturday. Each season sees some slight adjustment in the competition, but on this occasion a material increase in the quotas of most of the clubs incorporates no fewer than 1392 bowlers, as against 1200 last season. There i\re 0-1 clubs competing this time, to last season's 33. The dates for the five rounds arc again set down before Christmas and, providing wet weather does not interfere with the programme, the competition will be narrowed down to two clubs, which will play off a final contest either at the end of February or early in March. Carlton's Thirty Toams The Carlton Club heads the list in section A with the record number of 30 teams, truly a great load to carry. This represents an increase of four teams over last season's total. Tho opening record iast season was 19 wins and Boven losses, giving a pereentago of 73.07. It remains to be seen how far the added impost will affect the club in the opening round this time. Two of Carlton's opponents, Mount Eden and the winners of last season's contest, Hallyburton-Jolmstono, have had their quotas increased, the former by four and the latter by two teams.

Mount Eden's quota is now IS teams, which is quite in keeping with the largo and increasing membership of the club. Mount Eden opened with ft record of eight wins and six losses last season, while Hallyburton-John-stone achieved the possible with all wins, a. percentage of 100. This club will stiil be a force to be reckoned with, as the facilities for play at Point Chevalier arc such that- tho game has taken on well among tho residents, who fully relish the fine greens provided. Carlton's other opponent, Avondale, with six teams, two more than last season, has not been very prominent in the competition for some years now, and it is therefore pleasing to find that non-success is no bar to tho club's catering for most of its members. Play in this bracket will be very interesting, as the strong Carlton Club, heavily weighted, and tho victors of last season aro mooting on the first occasion.

Balmoral, which has the same quota as previously, 14 teams, opened with a percentage last seasonoor, r 61.28. Of its opponents, Onchunga (six) and Waitemata (eight), the former has gone up by two teams. There can be no grouch over Balmoral remaining the same, as forco of circumstances precluded an increase. Waitcmata's quota, too, is perhaps as much as the club can .bear. This club had a bad start last season, only two wins being recorded in tho opening round. Onehunga's Quota

Onehunga's new quota of 18 teams is about right. Besides the six teams against Balmoral tho club plays It) teams against Takapuna, formerly on an eight-quota basis. Onehunga's opening performance last season was 7J wins, (3> losses, while Takapuna's record was throe wins and five losses. Onohunga has its remaining two teams pitted against Stanley. The Onchunga club has been very prominent in this competition for tho past two seasons and this time, in spite of tho rise of four teams, it will probably be well in the running. Stanley fell from grace hist season in comparison to its performance of the two previous years. A rise in quota last season of two teams certainly had a steadying influence. No change occurs in tho quota this time so tho lovelling-up process should once again find the seaside club figuring among the forward division. The remainder of Stanley's quota is against Glen Eden, four toams Stanley opened last year with three wins and thrco losses and Glen Eden, whoso quota remains tho same, with one win and three losses. llemuera, previously 16 teams, has gone up to 20 teams, which should embrace a good percentage of tho actual playing members. Its opening percentage last year was 7•} wins and 8i losses. Tho first round opponents this time are West End (10 teams), Grey Lynn (eight teams) and Buckland's Beach (two teams). With West End increased from 12 teams to 14 teams and Grey Lynn from 10 teams to 14 teams tho contest would appear to be on a verv even basis. Henderson has gone up two toams and Helensvillo, four, has tho same quota as formerly. The former meets the remainder of Grey Lynn's quota, six teams, and Helensvillo likewise engages West End's four teams. The two four-rink clubs certainly seem to bo iii a good position to gain a win. Helensville, especially, will be a hard proposition, whilo Honderson no doubt will make a bold bid this time. Section B Teams

In section B tho parent club, Auckland, is on top with 24 teams, a rise ok four. Its first round opponents, Devonport (16), To Papapa (4) and Edcndalo (4), havo tho same quotas as formerly, but no fault can bo found with this reckoning. Opening performances last season were Auckland. 6 wins, 14. losses; Devonport, 6 wins. 10s losses; To Papapa. 2 wins, 2 losses; and Edendale, 2£- wins, 3J losses. The remainder of Edendalo's quota engage Howiek's two teams. Howick opened up with one win and one loss last season. i Tho newcomer, Papakuiia, plays Te Papapa (two teams). Tho former- is an unknown quantity, but judging bv tho calibro of a few of the players tho club should do well with two rinks. Epsom is another club to increase four toams and tho quota of 16 should givo most of its members a game. Saturday's opposition consists of St. Heliers (10 teams) and Uock.v Nook (six teams). The St. Heliers' quota is unaltered, while Rocky Nook goes from eight to 10 teams. The remainder of Rocky Nook's quota plays Now Lynn, four teams. Tho latter's quota is not altered. Opening records last season were St. Heliers, 5! wins, 4i losses; Rocky Nook, 2} wins. 7} losses; New Lynn, 1 win, 3 losses; and Epsom, 7 wins, 5 losses. Rawhiti and Otalmhu meet in a straight-out contest, eight rinks a-side, with the same, quotas as last season. Both clubs opened last season with four wins and four losses.

Ponsonby, 14 teams, the same quota as before, meets Mount Albert (10) and Papatoetoc (4). Mount Albert has gone from 12 to 16 teams, while Papatoetoc remains on eight. Both Ponsonby and Papatoetoc appears to he capable of at least a two-rink increase and apart from these two clubs the allocations appear perfectly sound. Ponsonby opened last season with 6 wins, 8 losses; Mount Albert, 7J wins. 4.J losses; and Papatoetoc, 5 wins, o losses.

Fllerslic's quota has increased two rinks, eight to 10, and tho mooting on Saturday is with Mount Albert (6) and Hillsborough (4). Elleralio had 4 wins, 4 losses, and Hillsborough, 2>\ wins, 1J losses, in the opening round last season.

Manurewa with the same quota plays Papatoetoe, four teams. The former's opening performance was two wins aud two losses.
