BRIDGE AT WHANGAREI
QUESTION OF WIDTH CLEARANCE FOR BOATS [by 7I"I, KG HAITI—OWN COTt II ESI'ONDF.NT] WHANGAREI, Tuesday At last night's meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council, Mr. R. P. Mor ley, consulting engineer, of Auckland, submitted a proposed design for a bridge to be erected parallel with the present Victoria Bridge at the Town Wharf. Mr. Worley contended that, as the bridge would be practically everlasting, the roadway should he at least 24ft. wide, and any alteration should be toward increasing the width. He also suggested that there be two footpaths, each oft. wide. Preliminary estimates indicated that the total cost would be £7OOO.
The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, said the proposed bridge provided for a clearance of only 7ft. Sin. at high tide, which would probably not satisfv the Whangarei Cruising Club. Mr. Worley, however, did not recommend any higher level as the approaches had to be considered.
The Town Clerk, Mr. A. D. Jack: The Public Works engineer will not pass the plans for application to the Loans Board if the width is to be 24ft.
Hie Mayor: T know from niv experience that ihe Public Works Department considers any width greater than 22ft. to be dangerous, owing to a third vehicle being tempted to cut between two vehicles when they arc passing.
The question of the approval of the plans was deferred until the next meeting of the council,' to enable the public to offer suggestions.
