FLYING AT WHANGAREI
AERO CLUB INCORPORATED SITES FOR AERODROME [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday Matters in connection with aviation have been advanced a stage further in Whangarei by the incorporation of the Whangarei Aero Club. This action was decided upon at< a recent meeting of the provisional committee, after receiving a report from the Public Works Department as to the suitability of areas in the district as aerodrome sites.
The report stated that, as a result of an inspection of the various areas adjacent to the Whangarei Harbour by Squadron-Leader L. M. Isitt, Public Works Department engineers, and others, it was recommended that tho triangular area at Kioreroa should be adopted as a temporary aerodrome site, and that the area at Otaika should be chosen as the permanent site for the aerodrome, it will take some time, probably five years, before the Otaika site, which is an ideal one, is properly prepared, and in the meantime the Kioreroa site could be used with advantage. There is ample room at Kioreroa to manoeuvre machines, and the site is very convenient to Whangarei. As soon as the Otaika area is prepared the aerodrome will be transferred to it. It is now fully expected the aero club will commence to function in earnest and that more aeroplanes will visit Whangarei. As soon as matters are a little further advanced and the Kioreroa site is finally made ready for tho landing and taking-off of aeroplanes, tho aero club* will arrange to have an instructor with a machine to train pilots. It is confidently expected that a large number of pupils will be enrolled for instruction.
