SUMMER SUNSHINE
CALL OF THE BEACHES YACHTSMEN MAKING READY A summer atmosphere prevailed in Auckland at the week-end. The clear skies, warm sunshine, and fresh breezes attracted most people outdoors. Yesterday the beaches of the North Shore and those of the harbour were well patronised and many people look the opportunity to wear for the first time their new bathing costumes. Opinions on the temperature of the water were, of course, widely different, and numbers of those who lacked the courage for the first dip enjoyed the day either rowing and paddling near the shore, in canoes and- dinghies, or sun-bathing. Saturday was ideal for all sport and cricketers, tennis players and bowlers took full advantage of such fine conditions so early in the season. There was a very good attendance to witness the first day's events of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, while the girls' athletic meeting at Blandford Park was well attended. Yesterday morning was equally fine and the ferries to the North Shore and the various excursion boats to the islands of the gulf were well patronised. There was a large number of motorists on the road and a',l the sheltered bays were thronged with picnickers. With the official opening of the yachting season in three weeks time many of the larger boats were launched, while toward sunset the harbour was liecked with the white sails of innumerable small craft, many of them returning after their first sail of the season. Although it was convenient for yachtsmen in that it was high water about 5 o'clock, the tides were very
poor and considerable difficulty was experienced in floating some of the craft off their cradles. About six yachts were put down at Judge's Bay, while about the same number of launches and yachts entered the \rater at Devonport.
