Steeton is a seven-year-old by Sutala from Roden and was bred by the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood. She has been extensively raced in the South Island since commencing her career as a three-year-old. Altogether she has contested £7 races for 11 wins, 10 seconds and 1(3 thirds. Her stake-winnings amount to £2IOO and a gold cup valued at £75. Of this sum her win on Saturday accounts for £9OO and the cup.

Steeton's previous form hud not reached a very high standard and in view of the fact that she could finish only fourth in a comparatively moderate field at Gore last month, it was not to bo wondered at that her victory proved a great surprise. Apparently slio was produced right at the top of her form and displayed staying ability hitherto unsuspected Steeton's sire Sutala, was a brilliant galloper whose racing career was cut short owing to an injury lie received whils competing at Trentham. He raced as a two-year-old in the 1914-15 season, being contemporary with Desert Gold, to whom he finished second in both the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the Royal Stakes. Sutaia won two juvenile handicaps, in one of these carrying 9.3 and running five furlongs in 1.1 at Ellerslie. He was by Elysian from Lady Hester, hence a close relation to Master Soult. It is probable that- had Ve not had his career cut shore Sutala would have reached a high standard as a racehorse,
