STEETON'S SURPRISE WIN GOLD TRAIL RUNS SECOND STEWARDS' TO GRAND SPORT SYMCONY'S WELCOME STAKES [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday A surprise victory by the Southland mare Steeton in the Now Zealand Cup created much excitement at the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting at Riccarton today. Steeton, bracketed with Cough, was tenth win favourite and eleventh place favourite, and returned large dividends.

The Stewards' Handicap was won by the Gisborne horse Grand Sport, who was first win favourite and second place favourite. The weather was fine hut dull. The course was in excellent order and the attendance was good. The totalisator handled £.'56,222, compared with £30,940 on the first day last, year, an increase of £282. lJesults:
